If you had the chance to enter your home or even let others in remotely from your smart phone would you do it? Sound a little futuristic? Well it's not, the time is now.
Kevo from Kwikset and Lockitron are on route to implementing this new way of entering your home through bluetooth. They both work through an app on your phone and can detect when you're in the vicinity and unlock the door. They also come with a key fob for regular use or when you forget your phone or have a low battery.
They also give you the option to give access to other people through the app by giving them the password. Each system has built-in Military or Online Banking grade encryption systems. The main difference between the two is that Lockitron allows you to unlock the door from anywhere in the world.
As someone who has a habit of locking themselves out of the house from time to time, and takes five minutes to find her keys in the abyss of her pocketbook I can definitely see the convenience and appeal here. It would kind of be like the keyless entry system to my Prius (which I couldn't imagine living without.)
If you lose your phone or notice it's gone you can log onto the sites through the web or another smartphone and deactivate or delete the keys and just use your key fob to get back in. The apps also alert you anytime the door is locked and unlocked and by what authorized user.
So what do you think? Are you gonna jump on board, pre-order, or wait and see what people think? I'm not sure which way I'm going just yet but I'm excited about the innovation and possibilities.
